Storm sirens around this county will sound this Tuesday, April 10, at 10 am as a test. Going forward, they’ll sound at 10 am the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month through November.
Greene County emergency management director Dennis Morlan explained that the tests that were previously done on Saturdays will be done on Tuesdays when more emergency responders are at work and able to help confirm the sirens are functioning adequately.
Also, the Greene County E 9-1-1 board recently paid for a technician to check every siren in the county. If there was an issue with a siren, each community was notified of the deficits so repairs could be made prior to the statewide Severe Weather Awareness Week. Most sirens were in excellent working order. The few issues with the sirens were with batteries that needed to be replaced.
“The Greene County E 9-1-1 service board is extremely proud of our county’s siren system,” Morlan said. The sirens can be activated from the law enforcement center or the county emergency management office. Each community can also activate their sirens locally. The sirens operate on AC electricity but in case of power failure, they will run on back-up batteries for several minutes.
